Whispers in Akarra was a MORPG (Multiplayer Online Roleplaying Game) initially developed by Jens "jeb" Bergensten (Formerly "Khaile"), though also developed by other developers as the project continued.[3] While not specifically an Oxeye Game Studio project, Whispers in Akarra is where Jens, Daniel "thewreck" Brynolf, and Pontus "Kinten" Hammarberg met each other and began to collaborate.[4] The game can currently be played via unofficial shards hosted by the community.[5]
Development History
The initial concept for Whispers in Akarra was drafted in October 2001 in a design book by Jens.[6] The following April, the first public version was released, with various pre-alphas following it. On 27 October of that year, pre-alpha 12 released, which also included spritework by Daniel and Pontus. The original shard was ultimately closed on 13 February 2004 following issues concerning maintaining the shard.[7] With this, he also made some development tools available, though the project was not made open source.[6] In 2006, the rights to Whispers in Akarra were sold to an individual, but citing failure to receive payment, Jens released the source code in 2008.[6]
Unofficial shards, such as one by a user named "Apocalypse", took advantage of Akarra's developer tools which resulted in the popular Akarrian Expansion. Various shards based on it have been hosted since then.[8]
